Minutes from 9/1/09 Meeting

Introduction by Beth Frazier, Past President
Opening remarks were given by Wayne Harris, President
Pledge of Allegiance
Introduction of officers, Vice President: Steve Warren, Secretary: Cyndi Lauderdale, and Treasurer: Betsy Flanagan.
Introduction of Principal Valerie Galberth who gave remarks and Vice Principal Stephanie Alston.
Secretary’s Report: Minutes from previous meeting approved and accepted.
Treasurer’s Report:
Betsy proposed the 2009-2010 budget which were approved and accepted.
New Business:
New Mat in front of school is a gift from last years PTA
Fundraiser Attraction books were a big hit last year and raised a lot of money. The cost is $25 per book with potential of $5,000 in savings. While PTA isn’t all about fund raising this book will be going home this week. Our school needs money with current budget issues. You will have about 3 weeks to turn back in. PTA may be responsible for any books not turned back in. We will have about 3-4 fund raisers.
A Fundraising Committee is being formed with a PTA officer rep., Kelly Joyner, Jessica Knox, Tina Ormond, and anyone else who wants to volunteer see an officer.
We would like to host a Safe Child Day with child seat checks, bike safety, etc.
An informational sign was purchased from last years PTA money. It is 2X5, double sided and will go out back where we pick up and drop off children. It will let you know what is happening at HB Sugg. Should be up in the next week or so.
A label letter was given out and told about a Staples printer paper sale. Some questioned the percentage of profit from these. The Food Lion MVP card is the best money maker. We can earn up to $500 each quarter. Currently we earn around $160 a quarter. After the meeting Cyndi looked up the MVP card. The “Shop and Share” link is getting an up grade and you can not log your cards in until mid-September. According to the website “a portion of your total grocery purchase will be donated to your organization.” Wendy Harris, Campbell label rep, told that it takes a lot of labels to get enough point to purchase school supplies, so keep collecting.
Other questions included our PTA goals. Beth went over items that PTA is currently responsible for book work, insurance, purchasing “want” items for teachers including Bigbook printers, K classroom library books, playground, 501c3 items, etc. Some questioned the point of being involved in State and federal PTA. Teachers and others explained the need to be in professional organizations and how they help in the larger picture that we as an individual school can not do to fight for your children’s education and keep them safe.
Betsy mentioned that your officers met twice over the summer and encouraged teachers to please come to us for need whether supplies or investment of time.
Wayne read the bylaws and PTA purpose. In brief these are to promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, and community. To secure laws for the care and protection of children, bring closer relationships between home and school and to develop united efforts to secure children education. Parents commented that PTA is to support parents and teachers and can’t answer all questions that should go to individual teachers or administration. But encouraged a teamwork approach based on the welfare of our children as a whole. Beth said we can make PTA what we want it to be. She sees it as loving a child to succeed.
Teachers discussed that they enjoyed the large parent turn out. There are many ways to get involved with curriculum, fall helpers, community helpers, help with reading, and any other ideas. Also mentioned that the Kiwanis in the past gave helmets to 2nd graders.
There are a few reading programs offered in the school. FACTS and RIF books. Children receive 3-4 books per year.
Mr. Smith the new music teacher was introduced. He plans on hosting a musical prior to a PTA event.
Any suggestions please put in PTA mail box in office. Memberships of $5 were collected prior and after the meeting. Anyone else wanting to join can put money in office mail box or contact an officer.
SIT (School Improvement Team) Representative: Felicia Langley. This is a committee of teachers, PTA, public, etc.
Meeting was adjourned.
After the meeting it was discussed to have another committee “Public Outreach” to attend Pitt Co. PTA council and school board meetings. A few expressed interest in this and then will report at the Nov. 3 meeting. If you are interested in this committee see an officer.
Respectfully submitted,
Cyndi Lauderdale, Secretary
