All students in grades 1
through 5 need a 1-subject notebook for Music class. This notebook will stay
with them throughout their time at South Greenville. Mrs. Peo keeps the
notebooks over the summer each year, and returns them to the fifth graders on
Graduation Day.
Students who brought a notebook to school as first graders do
not need to purchase a new notebook each year.
Only students enrolling at South Greenville for the first time need to purchase
a notebook.
As
fourth graders, students must choose to be in either General Music with Mrs. Peo
or Orchestra with Mrs. Pittman.
Mrs. Pittman speaks to all fourth grade classes the first week of school to
explain the process of joining the Orchestra. She sends notes home to parents
informing them of their children's options, at which time parents must indicate
whether their children will be participating in Orchestra. The following week of
school, Mrs. Pittman measures each child to determine the size of the instrument
needed. Instruments may be rented or purchased from local retailers. Mrs.
Pittman
provides this information. Several school instruments are
available on a first-come-first serve basis for students with great interest who
could not otherwise afford to develop their talents and musical skills on the
violin or other stringed instrument.
Parents need to make arrangements for their
children's instruments by the third week of school in order for them to
participate in Orchestra.
Students who elect to remain in General Music classes with Mrs. Peo are asked to
order a recorder by the third week of school.
The cost of a one-piece Baroque-fingering recorder and song book is
approximately $7.00. Mrs. Peo asks that students order the same instruments
through the school so that all recorders produce the same tone quality and
intonation when played together.
This year, some of the recorder students performed for our school and PTA
Holiday Concert.
If you have any questions
about the SGE Music program,
please contact Mrs. Peo or Mrs. Pittman at South
Greenville or e-mail us at our Groupwise addresses found on the Staff page of
the website.
This year, General Music classes were held in mobile unit 2 just outside of the 3rd
and 4th grade wing.
Orchestra rehearsals are on the cafeteria stage twice weekly.
The South Greenville
3rd - 5th Grade Chorus rehearses on Tuesday mornings beginning in September at 7:30 a.m. --before the
official school day begins--in the Music room. This year, the Music room is in
Mobile Unit #2, just outside the 3rd and 4th grade wing. The SGE Chorus performs
for a variety of school and community events each year. Repertoire includes
2-part harmonies, foreign language selections, and a variety of musical styles
and genres. We have had excellent participation since the beginning of the
choral program in 2002. Students are dedicated and maintain high standards for musicianship and
self-discipline.
Select fifth grade singers may participate in the Pitt County All-County Choral
Festival each spring.
Our 2008 Spring Concert was Thursday, May 8th at 7:00 p.m.
Select students performed for the Greater Greenville Kiwanis Club in April.
Students interested in singing in the 3rd-5th grade chorus must return
permission slips signed by their parents or guardian to Mrs. Peo before they can
participate. Enrollment will open again in January 2008.
Punctuality for weekly rehearsals and performances is a must!
Students wear white shirts and black slacks or skirts and shoes for
performances.
Thanks go to Mrs. Lynch for decorating the stage for our performances!
