Welcome Back!

South Greenville opened its doors with great success.  Over 400 students and 70 staff members were eager and excited about August 25, 2008 and have been going strong ever since.  The students looked very nice in their uniforms as they walked down the freshly painted halls to find their classrooms and teachers.

Uniforms: A reminder that our school colors for tops/shirts must be a plain polo-styled shirt (with a collar) and are black, gold and white.  No insignias, logos, labels, words, or pictures may be on the shirt except for the school approved mascot (“the cheetah”).  The bottom colors are khaki, black or navy.  Girls may wear jumpers, skirts, skorts, capris, shorts and pants.  Boys may wear shorts or pants.  No blue jeans or cargo shorts are allowed.     Shirts must be tucked.  No hooded sweatshirts or coats will be allowed to be worn in the classrooms.  Students may wear them to school but are expected to take them off once they enter their classrooms.  Students that violate the uniform policy will receive a warning on the first offense.  The second offense may warrant ISS.  Parents are encouraged to call administration, if there are questions regarding uniforms.  Also, the policy is available at http://www.pitt.k12.nc.us/files/schooluniforms.pdf.

PTA/Grade-Level/Title I Night

September 4, 2008

The first PTA meeting was held on September 4, 2008.  There were over 100 parents in attendance for the meeting.  At this meeting, parents were able to meet the 2008-09 PTA Officers.  The PTA Officers gave a brief overview of their goals for the upcoming school year.  They also encouraged parents to join PTA.  Membership is $5 this year and a drawing will be held on October 23rd for $50.  The next PTA event, PIZZA BINGO, will be held on October 23rd from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.  More information is forthcoming.  Also, PTA launched its first fundraiser for the school year, STARS.

The meeting also included information regarding SGE Title I Programs and AYP status.  Ms. Sylvia Mizzelle, Pitt County Schools Federal Programs Director, gave an overview on the No Child Left Behind mandates and SGE AYP status.  The meeting

concluded with the parents going to their child’s classroom to hear from the different teachers discussing the objectives and expectations of their respective grade level.  SES Vendors were in the halls to give information about the services.  The evening culminated with a drawing for uniforms that were given to four parents in attendance.

ATTENDANCE & EARLY DISMISSALS

It is vitally important that all of our students are in school every day for the entire day.  Our instructional day begins at 8:00 am.  All students that arrive past 8:00 am are considered tardy and are missing very important instruction when they arrive late.  We have implemented a tardy policy this year that will hopefully minimize the number of tardies.  If a student has 6 unexcused tardies for the nine-weeks, he/she will be assigned an after-school detention.  A letter will be sent home by the students when he or she accumulates 5 unexcused tardies in a nine-week period.  This policy is in our South Greenville Parent/Student Handbook.  We also ask that all students remain in school until our 2:30 pm dismissal.  When students are picked up early, he or she is missing the full day of instruction and may miss important directions and instructions for the next day.  We also understand that our students may have to go to the doctor or dentist; however, if appointments can be made after school this will assure that your child will not miss time during the day.  If your child is sick and must be out because of illness, please send a note the next day he or she returns.  Students are only allowed to miss 20 days per school year or they could be retained.

Individual classroom held special activities that fostered grandparents’ participation.  Many students made crafts in their classrooms and gave them to the grandparents as a token of appreciation for their visitation to the school.
