J. H. Rose High School Smaller Learning Communities

The Smaller Learning Communities Education Model is a direct result of five Eastern North Carolina High Schools coming together to form the Eastern North Carolina Collaborative, or the ENCEC. The ENCEC established a federal grant that will fund the progressive activities carried out by each participating high school.

About Smaller Learning Communities

A team of core teachers will focus attention on individual student needs and develop strategies to ensure the success of the students. The staff will devote time after school to assist students who are in need of extra help. Early intervention for at-risk students such as tutoring, parent confrences, and regular teacher/parents contact will be given. There will be a strong communication between teachers and parents through the phone, email, and personal contacts. As of this year all ninth graders will be inroled in Paideia.

The goals of SLC are to increase the number of students taking the SAT or ACT college entry exam and their scores. SLC also wants to increase the the daily attendance and the number of students in Dual Enrollment. The SLC staff wants to create smaller, more personalized learning enviroments where staff, students, parents and the community are actively involved. They want to decrease the number of incidents of school violence, alcohol and drug use.

SLC for Upcoming Freshman

The middle school will allow the eighth grade students to attend "A Day in the Life of a Rose Rampant." This entails a three hour orientation at J. H. Rose High School
  • Hour One: Students will be allowed to sit in an actual high school classroom from which they will learn about the expectations of a J. H. Rose High School student.
  • Hour Two: Students will participate in a seminar that will include topics such as attendance, athletics, clubs, pathways, etc.
  • Hour Three: Students will be given a tour of J. H. Rose High School.
The orientation will allow ninth grade students to become familiar with their new environment. This will alleviate freshman stress and anxiety. The students will be motivated to perform better in the eighth grade so that they will not be denied the ninth grade experience.

Teachers at J. H. Rose will compose lesson plans with activities that correspond with the first chapters of specific core classes. These lessons will be used by middles school teachers during the last two weeks of school after EOGs are complete. The lessons will provide meaningful learning as well as prepare students for the new school year.

The lessons, from which the students are exposed, will enhance the students' first weeks of learning at J. H. Rose High School. Students will gain self confidence in their ability as a result of their prior knowledge. Stress will be alleviated from the eighth grade teachers, which is created from the anxiety of deciding what to teach during the last week of school.
