“Where Pride is Rampant and Achievement Abounds” Volume 12, No. 2 January 2008 To The Students and Parents of J.H. Rose High School, This school year is now in full swing. We are approaching the midpoint of the 2007-2008 academic year. There remains a tremendous amount of work to do by all of the publics (faculty, staff, students, parents, and others) in this school community. Now is the time to re-energize our efforts by focusing on all aspects of the curricular/extracurricular activities to ensure success for all persons in this school. Together, we can do this. We are moving into a very special part of this school year as we proceed with course/class registration, (students will receive the registration guide in February) for the 2008-2009 academic year. It is imperative that both students and parents spend time studying the registration guide which is filled with specific information related to the courses and their requirements. My recommendation to you is to consult with your counselors and teachers for answers to your questions regarding detailed course registration information. Your decisions regarding course selections should be based on the information located in the registration guide. Please understand that once the individual registration form is completed by parent/guardian and student, that class schedule shall prevail, and at the end of the first five days of school, no schedule changes will be allowed except in extreme circumstances. In my opinion, a careful understanding of this registration guide and course selection will provide most of what you need for a successful school year. In addition to the registration process, I would like to briefly mention another topic, graduation tickets. The School Leadership Team and I agreed to allot ten graduation ceremony tickets to each graduating senior. I informed the Senior Class early in the semester that each of them would receive ten tickets for their guests. Hopefully, the seniors will use great care in inviting their guests to the ceremony. We look forward to a successful second semester at J.H. Rose High School. Sincerely, George W. Frazier, Ed.D. Principal The Rampant Theatrical Company "Fiddler on the Roof" April 10, 11, 14, & 15 at 7:00 pm and April 12 at 2:00 pm Admission: Adults: $10.00 Students and Senior Citizens: $5.00 for more information call; 321-6277 Rose Connection Page 2 F amily & Consumer Sciences Department had a very productive month of December! The Apparel II class, taught by Karen Minton concluded a unit on entrepreneurship by beginning a business, “Sew Unique”. Students prepared surveys concerning pricing of products, produced hats, scarves and bags, and sold the products during lunch, at ball games and by order forms. The Foods II class taught by Chrislyn Beresheim concluded their unit on entrepreneurship by producing “Magic Wands”, a chocolate covered pretzel. They worked with the drafting classes to produce a unique package to deliver the “wands”. Students took orders and delivered the hand dipped treats during 4th period on Dec. 18. The Foods II classes taught by Betsy McLawhorn held a bake shop as their “business” and prepared cheese crisps, quiche & key lime pie. We appreciate all the support from the Rampant community. Culinary Arts students, led by Betsy McLawhorn, held a cafe for all staff on Dec.12. Foods I classes taught by Carrie Overby & Ms. Beresheim prepared a holiday feast culminating the skills they had learned throughout the semester. Advanced studies students in Housing & Interiors are completing a project for home decor as well as a research paper. The products will be presented to judges for the final grades. Susan Smith leads these third year students to explore the subject in depth. Completed products include: chair upholstery, chair redesign and tabletop tile design. Students have researched the topic and made the product independently. Applications for Early Childhood Education will be required from students interested in taking this class during 2008-09. The deadline for applications is Feb. 8, 2008. Students should go by room 615 to pick up the application form. Early Childhood Education classes lead students to become teachers in child care as well as early elementary ages. The FCCLA club adopted 2 children for the holidays. A holiday party was held on Dec. 10. Attendees brought toys and clothes for the adoptees. The gifts were delivered by club officers, Breannia Best, Regime Speller, Hannah Postma and Julia Piner with advisor, Susan Smith. I n the Business Department our Computer Applications I students have been taking photographs, capturing video and video conferencing using the department’s web cams. The photographs and the video were inserted in their PowerPoint presentations entitled “All About Me”, which will be presented to classmates soon. Students have also been using voice recognition software. This software requires students to train the computer to recognize and respond to their individual voice patterns. As students speak into a microphone, their words are displayed on the screen, allowing the creation of documents. Each student creates a profile that is saved in his/her individual directory, thereby allowing students to access their profile from any computer in the school that has voice recognition software. Students in Computer Applications II have created web pages that are posted online. They also wrote & illustrated a children’s story using Macromedia Freehand and Microsoft PowerPoint. Future Business Leaders of America will be gearing up for second semester. Second semester holds a basketful of activities lined up for FBLA members. The second week in February is National FBLA-PBL week. We will also be preparing for the NC State Leadership Conference to be convening in April at the Four Seasons in Greensboro, NC. Our spring community service project will be Relay for Life. We are also gathering information to participate in the Juvenile Diabetes Walk. H ealth and Physical Education Department has had a wonderful semester with lots of progress and success, providing numerous opportunities for achievement in all areas. The department is in the process of administering the post fitness test to all classes. The majority of the students are showing an improvement in scores. As mentioned before, the uniforms are working well to provide unity among the student body, as well as an increase in the pass fail rate due to more students dressing out and participating. We will continue requiring uniforms in the spring semester at a cost of $20.00. Please consider sponsoring a uniform for your child’s classmate. In the spring semester we will also utilize outside agencies to educate and reinforce our instruction. The American Heart Association, East Carolina University, and other speakers and/or organizations, provide excellent opportunities for our students. Rose Connection Page 4 S tudent Government Association has had a very busy first semester. Second semester is sure to be just as busy! •. In December, the SGA sponsored all Salvation Army bell stations at Colonial Mall for a day. Over 70 students representing all grades participated and the day of bell ringing was an overall success. •. SGA also sponsored children at the Boys & Girls Club of Pitt County and local churches. Students donated gifts and money to be given to these children in time for the holidays. •. The freshman class sold candy cane Candy Grams to raise money for the class account. Students were able to purchase a candy cane for one dollar and send it to one of their peers as a surprise. This fundraiser brought holiday cheer to many students. •. The Rosebuds tutoring program allows J.H. Rose students to assist in the South Greenville Elementary School after school program. For the first time ever, the Rosebuds committee chairs organized a Rosebuds book drive. Over 400 books were collected. Each child in the after school program received numerous books and a personalized gift bag in time for the holidays. The book drive was an enormous success and SGA hopes to make this an annual event. •. Teachers received holiday gift bags courtesy of SGA. The bags included a crocheted snowflake ornament and a customized “J.H. Rose High School” pen. •. On Saturday, February 9th SGA will host a yard sale in order to raise money for remaining SGA events of this year. All students are encouraged to bring any unwanted items to room 213. •. On the first Tuesday of every month the Leadership Development committee hosts a seminar for students. Past meetings have focused on healthy living and leadership in the movies. Meetings are held in the Lecture Hall beginning at 7pm. •. The Junior Class will be promoting the yearbook patronage initiative. This program allows businesses and community members to purchase a yearbook at a reduced price, which will be given to a senior rampant who would not otherwise be able to afford a yearbook. Seniors with the high GPAs on the free and reduced lunch list will have priority. •. DataMatch is back! By simply filling out a quick survey, DataMatch tells a student who they are most and least compatible with as friends and as dates. DataMatches will be sold during all lunches. •. Senior class t-shirts are in! Shirts will be sold for ten dollars during all lunches outside the cafeteria. •. The North Carolina Association of Student Councils State Convention will be held at J.H. Rose High School March 1st-3rd. Over three hundred students from across the state will travel to Greenville to further their leadership skills. This three-day event will require an incredible amount of time and planning, but J.H. Rose High School is excited about this opportunity! •. SGA meetings are held on the last Friday of every month at 7:30am in the lecture hall. All students are invited to attend. •. The State Convention being held at Rose will bring over 300 students from across the state to Greenville for three days and two nights. The SGA needs host homes for these students. We are asking for any families willing to host students to volunteer to take at least two students. Hosts need to transport the students to and from the school over the weekend; parents’ cars are the only vehicles the visiting students may ride in. In order to host students a sleeping bag, air mattress or bed must be provided along with bathroom facilities for as many students as you would like to host. If interested please contact Becca Harris at bec2590@yahoo.com with Host Home in the subject line or Luisa Haynes at J.H. Rose at phone: 321-3640 ext. 352 or email: haynes.rose@pitt.k12.nc.us. Through CFNC, students have completed some career exploration exercises and have begun working on a four-year high school plan. Students enrolled in Healthful Living second semester will have the opportunity to complete these items second semester. Parents, ask your students to share their logs with you. You may access the web site at http://www.cfnc.org. Our counseling team here at Rose is making an effort to follow the ASCA (American School Counseling Association) model of school counseling.
