Administrative News
Congratulations on the completion of the third nine-weeks! With nine weeks left in the school year, we still have a lot of work to do. It has been a pleasure to serve as your principal this year. I look forward to many more years of service to Bundy Elementary and the community of Farmville! Together, we can beat any odds, excel at any task, and triumph over any test! Next school year, Sam D. Bundy Elementary School will begin Positive Behavior Supports. This program is designed to reward positive behaviors and down play negative behaviors, in an effort to "catch students doing the right thing." Incentives will be offered, but many incentives will not be "material." The goal is to teach students to do the right thing because of the personal satisfaction they receive. Charts teaching the expected behaviors will be posted in the hallways around our school. There will be expectations for staff and students. Each chart will designate the area of our school and the expected behaviors for that area. This program promises exciting results… Next year, school uniforms will also be a daily ritual. Bundy’s school colors for shirts are royal blue or gold. Pants should be khaki, or navy blue. Uniforms are a good way to promote ownership in a school. Uniforms may also help reduce headaches about favorite clothes to wear to school. Although the opinions about uniforms are about as numerous as the number of stars, they are a fact of life. We need to be as positive about this experience as possible. This way, our children will learn to accept things in life in which they have little control. Last, I want to thank you in advance for working with the Bundy Administrative Team. There are going to be a few changes in the way we do business next year, in an effort to become the best school we can be. There will be challenges, one such challenge will be staffing. Because of changes that may be inevitable during the summer, teacher requests will not be accepted for next year. The Administrative Team will do its very best to make decisions in the best interest of every child enrolled at Bundy. In an effort to keep classes as small as possible as well as making them friendly places for students, we will look at a myriad of information from teachers in making class selections. Please try to work with us. Changes in class assignment will be very few. This keeps things fair. I look forward to next year! M.B. Jenkins Cathy Kirkland TAG – Mrs. Barbara Sauls
Competition is the name of the game in TAG right now. We are thrilled to announce that fifth grader Matthew Meeks took top honors for the state of North Carolina in the prestigious Annual History Essay Contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Matthew will be honored by the state chapter at a luncheon on April 26 in Raleigh. The local Benjamin May Chapter of the DAR honored Matthew and other local winners back in February. They are sponsoring Matthew’s trip to Raleigh to accept the award. Congratulations Matthew! Wednesday, April 16 Bundy’s Math Masters Team will travel to the campus of ECU to compete against other district schools. Team members have been practicing for several weeks and are excited about the opportunity. The morning session consists of pencil and paper tests. First, there are the individual tests and then, the teams compete in groups of three for the team competition. The afternoon session takes on the feeling of a sporting event. The high scorers on the individual test leave behind their paper and pencil and go head to head in a high pace mental math challenge. The field is gradually narrowed to the top five or six, who then compete in a Jeopardy style format. Team members for Bundy this year are as follows: Third grade team- Kiera Finney, Matthew Sharpe, Anna Letchworth, Ronnie Harris, Dustin Clift, Allison Haddock and Alternate – Matthew Allen. The fourth Grade team consists of Caleb Leggett, Will Monroe, Kaela Parker, Albert Harris, Xavier Stokes, Daniel Watson and Alternate Ashby DuBose. The fifth Grade anchors the team with seasoned veterans, Connor Black, Matthew Meeks, Lillie Rhodes, Evan Wainwright, and Nolan Hobbs returning after barely missing the cut last year. First year competitor Landon Toler and Clare Allen as alternate rounds out the team. Congratulations to these students who beat out some stiff competition to make the team. They are already winners just by making it to the final group. Good Luck and Go Bobcats!!! *Upcoming Events*
April 22nd –28th – Buy One, Get One Book FairApril 29th – Early Release Day at 12:10pm3rd Grade We are looking forward to our field trip on May 2, 2008 to the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. In the fourth Nine Weeks we are focusing on plants, economics, fractions, probability, and measurement. We continue to practice E.O.G. concepts to prepare for this all-important test. Thank you for your continued support and help with your child’s education. 4th Grade The third nine weeks was a great one and we only have one left for the year! This fourth nine weeks EOG is the buzz! We are hard at work daily reviewing the skills needed to pass those tests as well as continuing on with current curriculum. This focus time is being done through small group instruction and rotation through centers each week. In math we are moving into perimeter and area along with probability. Science has us winding up our unit on nutrition and diving into electricity and magnetism to close out the year. Civil War and Civil Rights are among topics to be discussed in Social Studies. We will also be looking at North Carolina’s economic growth and diversity. Fairy tales and folk tales are what are in store for Reading. We will also take a look at a variety of plays. We hope to have another successful nine weeks and appreciate your continual support in helping your students learn to the best of their ability! 5th Grade The end of the school year is upon us. Our students are working very hard to prepare themselves for 6th grade. We recently had a wonderful trip to Farmville Middle and our students learned a lot about the expectations teachers have for them next year. One of the main things stressed was that students their materials with them every day. Please check with your child every night to make sure they have everything they need to be successful in school the next day. The last nine weeks also brings with it the EOG’s. Some of the best things you could do with your students are simple reviews, which can include but are not limited to: If you would still like to purchase a yearbook for your child there are still some available. The cost is $12 and they are full colored, have fun pictures, and provide autograph space for your children’s friends to sign. Mrs. Saunders Class
Mrs. Saunders class has been very busy preparing for the Special Olympics Track and Field Events, which will be held at Rose High School on April 9, 2008. It is our hope that we earn lots of ribbons for our efforts. In March our class traveled to H. Boyd Lee Park in Greenville for the annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the Pitt County Board of Realtors and Greenville Parks & Recreation. Although it was windy and cold, our students and teachers really enjoyed themselves. Our major focus in communication this past nine weeks has been reading fluency, comprehension, letter recognition and sounds. We have, also, been working hard on sentence construction and expanding sentences. Our focus in math has been number recognition, multiple digit addition, subtraction skills, telling time, coin recognition and counting money. Our science focus has been plants and weather and social studies has been calendar skills.
